Things to Come

Three prophecies in today’s reading jumped out at me.

1. Prophecy Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14)
Fulfillment: The birth of Jesus Christ came after an angel appeared at different times to Mary and Joseph and told them what to call Jesus. (from Matthew 1:18-21) Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “BEHOLD, THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A SON, AND THEY SHALL CALL HIS NAME IMMANUEL,” which translated means, “GOD WITH US.” (Matthew 1:22-23)

2. Prophecy For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us… (Isaiah 9:6)
Fulfillment: For today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:11)
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

3. Prophecy Jesus said, “Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven…There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves.” (from Luke 21:10-11, 25)
Fulfillment: To be determined.
Yet…I must note these verses read like the headlines. During my lifetime, I’ve seen a significant increase in world wars, major earthquakes*, and tsunamis. When I was a teenager, I didn’t even know the word tsunami.

*Increase in frequency of major earthquakes:
1863 to 1900 incl 38 yrs—12
1901 to 1938 incl 38 yrs— 53
1939 to 1976 incl 38 yrs— 71
1977 to 2014 incl 38 yrs—164 (to Mar. 2011) predict >190 in total.
